Interview with Marc Smyth

in depth profile

Marc Smyth was targeted as a signing by caretaker manager James Grady, before Alan Moore took over but he was actually signed by Mr Moore as one of his first moves in the transfer market after he arrived in summer 2010.

Alan Moore inherited the team with the most number of goals conceded in the SFL and his first aim was to sort that out which he did with the signings of St Johnstone defender Stuart McCaffrey and Marc Smyth. These two have been Morton’s first pick central defence since arriving and what a difference they have made! From having the poorest defence in the league, conceding 65 goals, Morton moved to having one of the better goals against figures.

So far this season, that trend has continued and, at the time of writing, Morton have played four competitive matches and conceded no goals at all!

Although born in Scotland, Marc is Northern Irish and has represented his country at under 16 and under 18 level whilst a youth player at Blackpool. He returned to Scotland and was signed by Ayr United from Glenafton Athletic. After four successful seasons there, he moved to Partick Thistle but personal differences restricted his stay there to one season. He moved on to Airdrie where he spent 4 seasons, scoring the winning penalty in that club’s Challenge Cup final against Ross County.

Marc sees the 2011/2012 season in the first division as being tough with many of the teams being relatively evenly matched. He qualifies that by saying that he believes Morton have some of the best players in the league and that holding the core of last season’s team together can only be good for the club.

We hope he is right!
