Interview with Stuart McCaffrey

in depth profile.

Stuart McCaffrey is an experienced and highly competent central defender and also our club captain. His career started at Hibs and Aberdeen but he is best remembered for his time at Inverness and then St Johnstone. He has much experience at both SPL and first division level and during his 8 years at Inverness Caley he was part of the team that won promotion from the first division in season 2003/2004 and a regular starter in their first season in the SPL.

Increasingly at Inverness as his time there passed he became more of a fringe player and therefore decided to move on to St Johnstone in the summer of 2008 when the opportunity arose and, again, was a regular in their starting eleven in season 2008/2009. Injury restricted his appearances the following season and he was released to join Morton in the summer of 2010.

Last season Stuart was pretty much ever present in the Morton team, playing in 34 of our 36 league matches. As well as being a solid and reliable centre back, he is also the type of player who talks to his team mates and will help younger players through matches.

Looking to the future, Stuart has started training for his coaching badges, encouraged by manager Alan Moore who has involved him in youth coaching and allowed him to take the first team during bounce game. He is a highly articulate individual, well able to put his point of view across and will no doubt become involved in management at some point in the the future.

Signed initially on a one year deal, Stuart played no small part in shoring up our defence which the season before was the worst in the SFL. For that reason and for all the other qualities he brings to the club, he was one of the first players that Alan Moore secured on a contract extension which Stuart was happy to sign, despite interest from other clubs.
