Interview with Peter Weatherson
in depth profileWhat can be said about Peter Weatherson? Spoonsy, as he is known, is a player held in high affection by most Morton fans and has been the club’s leading scorer for the last five years in a row. As well as being a dangerous striker, he is also a highly accomplished defender who can equally comfortably occupy a central or right sided defensive slot. In our promotion season 2006/2007, he ended up as the club’s leading scorer with 18 goals having played the whole season at right back! He is perhaps not the fastest player but more than makes up for that through his excellent reading of the game and positional sense.
Peter started his professional career with a non league side, Newcastle Blue, and was spotted at the age of nineteen by Queen of the South who surrounded him with three of their coaches, John Connelly, Iain Scott and Warren Pearson and whisked him off to Palmerston in 2000. He became a fixture in their team playing mainly as an attacking midfielder, making 114 appearances and scoring 45 goals. In the close season 2003, Morton paid £30,000 for Peter and he made his competitive debut for us in a first round Challenge Cup match against Arbroath at Cappielow on 2 August 2003. In what was a remarkable match, Morton won 4-3 with Peter grabbing a hat trick including a 90th minute winner after Arbroath had equalised with 2 minutes to go! That set the tone for Peter’s career with us and he became a fans’ favorite. It’s fair to say that Peter has lived the highs and lows of being a high profile Morton player. He was with us throughout the disappointments of three seasons in a row just missing out on promotion but, throughout, there has been no doubt that he has been an asset to the team. In the five years with us up to season 2007/2008, Peter has made over 200 appearances in a Morton shirt and scored 74 goals. That’s a record none of our current players can match and only a few of our legends! He signed a new contract with us in December 2008 which will see him remain a Morton player until at least May 2010. Having had a reputation for enjoying a good time in his early years at Cappielow, Peter has settled down with his partner to whom he is engaged and they have a two year old daughter who is the apple of her dad’s eye. When not playing football, he enjoys his family and a game of snooker.
