Breaking | Kyle Thomson signs for Morton

Greenock Morton Football Club are pleased to confirm the signing of midfielder Kyle Thomson on a six-month contract until 15 January 2019, subject to international clearance.

The 22-year-old played for Loyola Ramblers, the varsity football team of Loyala University based in Chicago, until completing his studies this summer.

Thomson, who has a Scottish father and holds both a UK and US passport, arrived at the club on trial for pre-season training and impressed manager Ray McKinnon enough to be offered a deal until the turn of the year.

He put pen to paper at Cappielow this afternoon but will not be eligible to turn out for McKinnon’s men until the necessary clearance is received.

Speaking to media officer Jonathan Mitchell, McKinnon said: “Kyle is a young kid who has come over and done really well and we have given him an opportunity for the next six months to see if he can earn an extended deal.

“He has signed today and we are now waiting to receive international clearance as he come to us from American university football. We’re not quite sure how long that will take, but he won’t be available for tomorrow.

“He was actually here for a brief taster last summer before he finished off his studies and his father, who is from this neck of the woods, contacted us after he finished his degree.

“Kyle can play the holding role in midfield. He’s got talent, is a good passer of the ball, a good athlete, and has fit in well. His attitude has been fantastic in training and the games he’s been involved in.

“We’ve rewarded him with an opportunity and he’s got six months to give it everything he’s got and try and earn an extended deal.”
