Cappielow to host Scotland Under-17s in March

We have reached an agreement with the Scottish Football Association to stage two UEFA European Under-17 Championship elite round qualifying fixtures at Cappielow in March.

Scotland will host Montenegro here on Friday 17 March before Group 4 rivals Montenegro and Switzerland face off at the ground two days later on Sunday 19 March.

These are the opening set of fixtures in the four-team section, which also includes Serbia, in the second qualifying round for the finals tournament to be staged in Croatia in May.

The young Scots actually booked their place at the 2014 equivalent in Malta with a memorable 3-1 victory over Belgium here at Cappielow – a match in which current loan star Aidan Nesbitt scored in a sensational individual performance.

Chief executive Warren Hawke said: “This is great news for the club and Inverclyde in general. It gives fans the opportunity to come along and watch the stars of tomorrow play an important competitive match right on their own doorstep.

“The club staff deserve a great deal of credit for their work behind the scenes to make the necessary arrangements to bring the matches here, especially Mark Farrell, whose excellent playing surface would have played a significant part in the SFA’s decision to utilise Cappielow.”
