Celtic goalkeeper Doohan joins on loan

We are delighted to announce that Celtic goalkeeper Ross Doohan has today joined the club on a development loan until 4 January 2018.

The 19-year-old shot-stopper is a regular for the Parkhead outfit’s Under-20s and made five appearances in the UEFA Youth League last term.

Doohan twice featured in matches at Cappielow, starting between the sticks in a 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach and a 4-1 loss against Barcelona.

Manager Jim Duffy has been on the teenager’s trail for a number of weeks and admits he has been brought on board to push Derek Gaston for the No.1 jersey rather than serve as back-up.

Duffy today told gmfc.net: “Ross is a very talented young goalkeeper. Like a lot of the bigger clubs, Celtic have a huge number of players and I spoke to Brendan Rodgers regarding Ross several weeks ago.

“He just wanted to let things settle down a little bit in terms of his squad before he decided whether he was going to let some players out on loan.

“They’ve started to do that now; a couple of players have gone out on loan, and Ross has come to us and I’m delighted to have him on board.”

Duffy will now look to send Jamie McGowan out on loan to gain senior experience of his own and explained: “Ross’s arrival is no reflection on young Jamie.

“What we want from Jamie is for him to go and play regular first-team football. That’s really my aim for him now, to try and get him out on loan.

“He has improved significantly Jamie, but I just felt it would be a good for someone like Ross, who’s been at Celtic and has a terrific reputation, to come and compete with Derek Gaston. He’s not coming as back-up – he’s coming to compete.”
