Community Update | Foodbank Collection

Greenock Morton’s Community Trust organised a matchday collection at Morton v Kilmarnock which gathered immense donations for the Inverclyde Foodbank from charitable supporters.

Greenock Morton Community Trust joined forces with Inverclyde Foodbank for a successful matchday collection which resulted in a huge number of donations from generous Ton and Killie supporters.

The Community Trust put out a call asking those attending the match to donate much-needed items such as UHT milk, biscuits and tinned ham. Fans from both Morton and the away team, Kilmarnock, responded to the request with big-hearted donations of food and cash.

The Inverclyde Foodbank has been operating in the community since 2012 and its manager Andrew McAlees said, “The Inverclyde Foodbank relies heavily on the generosity of the local community in Inverclyde. It was incredible to see the volume of donations we received from supporters of both teams at Saturday’s match. People really responded to the call and we’re incredibly grateful to them. Thank you to everyone who supported us.”

The Inverclyde Foodbank provides support to around 250 families per month in the local community, and Greenock Morton Community Trust was keen to throw their support behind the cause and raise awareness among football supporters.

Brian McLaughlin, CEO of Greenock Morton Community Trust said, “The foodbank locally is a service that supports many local families and  is crucial for reducing food poverty and concerns in our community. The fans of both teams played a key part in the success of the collection and we can’t thank them enough! As a community trust we are proud to be part of the Inverclyde community and always look to tackle societal issues.”

On the day the collection was supported by many volunteers from Greenock Morton Community Trust, Morton Club Together and Foodbank volunteers, without this support the collection wouldn’t be a success.
