Gavin grateful for Morton chance

New Morton signing Gavin Gunning is excited to have been given a chance to rejuvenate his career at Cappielow after penning a contract until January.

The Irish central defender had been without a club since leaving Dundee United in April but yesterday completed a move to the Ton on an initial short-term basis.

And in an exclusive first sit-down interview with gmfc.net, Gavin told how he is grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get back playing regular football with the Sinclair Street side.

The 25-year-old said: “I’m excited to get playing. It’s been a frustrating time since I left Dundee United. I had some great times when I was there: I played in the Scottish Cup final, the League Cup final, got in the SPL Team of the Year and a move to England.

“Last season was a big struggle. I gave everything, it just didn’t work. Whatever happened, happened, that’s in the past, and I’m just looking forward to playing some football and just hoping I can do well here for Morton and for us to kick up the table.

“The gaffer is a straight talker. Sometimes you get managers that when you come in they give you the whole spiel, but he just said: ‘Come in and do the business and see where it goes from there.’ I’m happy to do that and hoping I can do well.

“I’m happy to have been given this opportunity. As I say, it’s been frustrating; to go from thinking you have a lot of offers to your reputation getting tarnished and clubs being unwilling to take a chance on you – so I was happy when that call came to come up.

“I’m not interested in money or anything like that – I just want to play games. I hope to stand out and do well, but the team is the main thing. I’m happy to be back in a team environment and this seems like a good group of young players.”

The defender could be pitched straight into the team for tomorrow’s Ladbrokes Championship fixture against Dunfermline Athletic at Cappielow but admits he still has a bit to find in terms of match sharpness.

He added: “It’s a nice pitch. I was down there on Wednesday and it is in great nick. I was doing a bit extra to get the legs going again. I’m fit but playing games is different to anything else. Hopefully I’m ready for Saturday; I can’t wait.”
