Halliwell signs on loan until the end of the season

Greenock Morton are pleased to announce the signing of Gartcairn Juniors goalkeeper Bryn Halliwell on loan until the end of the season.

The veteran shot-stopper returns to Cappielow for a second spell following a short stint as emergency cover at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, making four starts in his month with the club.

Almost eight years on, current Ton boss Jim Duffy has turned to 36-year-old Halliwell as experienced back-up for Derek Gaston in the closing stages of the Ladbrokes Championship campaign.

The Greenock gaffer told gmfc.net: “We have signed Bryn Halliwell on loan from Gartcairn Juniors until the end of our season.

“I think it was important to have a bit of experience just in case something happened with Gats at this stage of the season.

“We’d only have young Jamie [McGowan] and you can’t take anybody else in after the deadline, so it was important to do that now because if something happened to Derek then we’d be under pressure in the goalkeeping area.

“From that point of view, young Jamie will still be there and involved, no doubt about that. It’s just more or less to give us a bit of extra experienced cover at this stage of the season.

“Bryn was at Clyde when I went there and he’s a good guy who’s available at this moment in time and who understands the situation that Gats is No.1. He was happy to come in and we’re delighted to have him.”
