John Sutton bolsters development squad

John Sutton has today strengthened his development squad ahead of the new SPFL Reserve League One season with the addition of defender Daniel Martins.

The 17-year-old centre-half, who was born in Nigeria and raised in Scotland, joins the club on a six-month contract after a successful trial spell that included an appearance in the recent friendly against Largs Thistle.

Sutton told media officer Jonathan Mitchell: “Daniel came in for pre-season after he was recommended to us by a scout and we’ve decided to offer him a contract as we feel there’s a lot of potential there.

“His attitude and enthusiasm has been exemplary; he’s a powerful lad with great athleticism who’s strong defensively, and hopefully coming in to train with us will help develop his game further.

“The question we ask ourselves is: ‘Does Daniel have the potential to be knocking on the Morton first-team door in a year or two?’ We believe that’s the case, just as we believe that is the case for all the boys with us.”
