Scene Setter

It’s all to play for tomorrow afternoon as Morton take on Partick Thistle at Firhill in their final group G match in the Betfred Cup.

David Hopkin’s men will feel that they should have come away from Wednesday’s Renfrewshire Derby against St Mirren with all three points following a terrific second-half performance against Premiership opposition. The ‘Ton were held to a draw at the end of 90 minutes and would miss out on the bonus point after the losing the penalty shootout, 6-5.

Morton and Partick Thistle can still mathematically win the group with three points tomorrow but in order for this to happen they would be relying on Queen’s Park to beat St Mirren at Lesser Hampden if either are to be within a chance of leapfrogging the Buddies for the top spot.

If the Sinclair Street side can produce a similar display to that which saw them boss the second half against St Mirren then they should feel confident heading into tomorrow’s encounter against the Jags.

Morton Milestones & Significant Stats

2 – Cameron Blues is the ‘Ton’s top goal-scorer so far this term with 2 strikes in 6 competitive games

Last Time Out

In Morton’s last game of the decade, the ‘Ton lost out in a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to Partick Thistle in the Ladbrokes Championship back in December last year.

The visitors would be quick off the mark with Alex Jones who, on the end of a long ball, found space to run into and hit an effort on goal which put the Jags ahead on 5 minutes.

But after continuous pressure from Morton, the reward finally came as a penalty was awarded on 29 minutes, allowing Kyle Jacobs to finish smartly into the bottom left corner making it one-all at that stage of the match.

However, the winner arrived just after the hour mark as a corner from Alex Cole found Thomas O’Ware who was able to nip in at the front post and knock it home to put Thistle back in front.

David Hopkin’s side rallied again, dominating the latter stages and putting the visitors under sustained pressure but the Jags held out.
