Morton to play Manchester United at Cappielow

We are delighted to announce that our reserve side will host English Premier League giants Manchester United in a challenge match at Cappielow on Thursday 15 November, with a 2pm kick-off.

John Sutton’s Morton kids will face an Old Trafford team managed by Under-23s boss Ricky Sbragia as part of a four-day training camp based at the National Sports Training Centre in Largs.

Director of youth Derek Anderson was approached with the proposal for a friendly as well as an invite to attend their training sessions, and he was delighted to accept the offer and host the Red Devils reserves in Greenock.

Speaking to media officer Jonathan Mitchell, Anderson said: “We had Jim Fleeting from the SFA down at our training recently and he was raving about the standard of player we have in our reserves.

“A couple of days later he got in touch saying Ricky Sbragia from Man United was going to give me a call about their reserves coming up to train at Largs.

“They’ve invited me and John Sutton down to watch them training, both in Largs while they’re up and down there in the future as well, and also asked about a game on the Thursday, which we’ve agreed to host at Cappielow.

“It’s a bit of a glamour match, Manchester United coming to play Greenock Morton. No matter who you support you would go and see that, especially if you live in the Inverclyde area. And it’s something the boys will be up for.

“After the game, we’ll get both squads together and put food on. It will be a great experience for them, and there could also be an opportunity to take the boys down and play them at Man United’s training ground.

“So we’re over the moon. We’re looking forward to it now, and hopefully the people of Inverclyde will come out and see the stars of the future. Who knows, you might see the next Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo!”

The game is open to the public and admission prices are as follows:
