Spotlight: Morton Women

SWFL Division 2 West league leaders Morton Women came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw against Ayr United at Notre Dame High School yesterday and stretched their unbeaten run to 13 matches.

The Ton girls conceded in the final quarter of an hour but equalised within two minutes when Rachael McConnachie nipped in ahead of the Honest Men’s goalkeeper to force the ball over the line.

Striker McConnachie’s goal preserved their fine record and opened up a five-point gap over second place Dumbarton United in the maiden season for Laura Williamson’s senior team.

Head coach Laura wasn’t entirely satisfied with the outcome after seeing her side dominate the 90 minutes and hit the woodwork three times.

She told gmfc.net: ” It was a frustrating game with the amount of possession we had and chances that we created.

“Ayr defended strongly and caused us a few problems on the counter attack. The team showed character to come from a goal down and it is another point for us in our first season together.

“We have six fixtures left and just need to focus on each game as they come. Next week, we travel to Stranraer and that will be another tough challenge for the squad.”
